Turkey has a rich and diverse cuisine that reflects its history and culture. There are many delicious dishes to try in Turkey, from appetizers and snacks to main courses and desserts. Here are some of the most popular ones:
Turkish meze: A selection of small plates that are served before or with the main course. They can include hummus, ezme (spicy tomato salad), tarama salata (fish roe dip), dolma (stuffed grape leaves), cacik (yogurt with cucumber and garlic) and more1.
Simit: A circular bread with sesame seeds that is often eaten for breakfast or as a snack. It can be stuffed with cheese, jam, olives or other fillings12.
Leblebi: Roasted chickpeas that are a popular street food and snack. They can be sweet or salty, and sometimes mixed with nuts or dried fruits2.

Borek: Thin layers of pastry filled with cheese, spinach, meat or other ingredients and baked or fried. They can be shaped into rolls, triangles or squares.
Lahmacun: A thin crust topped with minced meat, onion, parsley and spices and baked in a wood-fired oven. It is often rolled up with salad and lemon juice.
Kofte: Meatballs made from ground beef or lamb, onion, bread crumbs and spices. They can be grilled, fried or cooked in a sauce.
Dolma: Vegetables such as peppers, tomatoes, zucchini or eggplant stuffed with rice, meat, herbs and spices and cooked in olive oil or tomato sauce.
Pilav: Rice cooked with butter, onion, chicken stock and sometimes nuts, raisins or vermicelli. It is a common side dish for many Turkish meals.
Corba: Soup made from various ingredients such as lentils, chicken, yogurt, wheat or vegetables. Some of the most popular ones are ezogelin (red lentil soup with tomato paste and onion), yayla (yogurt soup with mint) and tarhana (fermented wheat soup).
Lokum: A sweet confectionery made from sugar, starch and water and flavored with rose water, lemon, pistachio or other ingredients. It is also known as Turkish delight12.
Baklava: A dessert made from thin layers of pastry filled with chopped nuts and soaked in syrup or honey. It is often cut into diamond-shaped pieces.
Kunefe: A dessert made from shredded pastry filled with cheese and soaked in syrup. It is baked until crispy and golden and served hot with pistachios.
Sutlac: A rice pudding cooked with milk, sugar and vanilla and sometimes baked in the oven. It can be garnished with cinnamon or nuts.
